Overview

It’s remarkable how much the Lord can say to us in only five words of Scripture. Scattered throughout the Bible are small phrases that pack a punch. They teach truths, uncover human frailties, reveal God’s grace, and even expose Satan’s schemes.

Bestselling and beloved author Warren Wiersbe offers one hundred concise but nourishing devotions that zero in on powerful, five-word statements from the Bible. Each devotion is quickly digested, easily remembered, and leaves a lasting impact. Believers who are hungry for more of God’s Word will use this book of bite-sized meditations for daily encouragement and renewal.

Top Highlights

“There are sins of the flesh and sins of the spirit (2 Cor. 7:1), and we tend to emphasize the first and minimize the second. But sins of the spirit can also bring terrible consequences. Jesus equated anger with murder and lust with adultery (Matt. 5:21–30). He showed compassion to publicans and sinners, but he called the proud scribes and Pharisees ‘children of the devil.’” (Page 36)

“We all want to receive blessings from the Lord, but not everybody wants to be a blessing to others. That’s one difference between a river and a swamp. The godly believer in Psalm 1 received blessing from God and then became like a tree, sharing the blessing with others. An English proverb says, ‘He who plants trees loves others besides himself.’ That proverb also applies to Christians, who should share like fruitful trees.” (Page 13)

“first questions the Word, then denies the Word, then substitutes his own lies” (Page 8)

“Christians are supposed to be channels, not reservoirs. To receive God’s blessings and then selfishly keep them is to violate one of the basic principles of the Christian life. ‘The generous soul will be made rich, and he who waters will also be watered himself’ (Prov. 11:25). We are blessed so that we might be a blessing.” (Page 12)

“A temptation is Satan’s cheap substitute for the real gifts from heaven the Father has given us” (Page 9)
