William Smith (1813–1893) was educated in classical literature, Greek, and Latin—from that foundation, he turned his attention to lexicography. Smith was the editor of five subject dictionaries, including the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Biography and Mythology, the Dictionary of Greek and Roman Antiquities, and Smith’s Bible Dictionary. He was the editor of the Quarterly Review from 1867 until his death.
