Overview

Published originally as a tool to aid in the composition of Greek sentences, S.C. Woodhouse’s massive English–Greek Dictionary: A Vocabulary of the Attic Language is a valuable tool for building a vocabulary of the Attic dialect. With Woodhouse’s dictionary, the user looks up an English word in order to find the equivalent Greek meaning, making Woodhouse’s work unique with respects to other traditional Greek lexicons. And because the sources Woodhouse used for his examples were taken from the Classical writers of Greek literature, if you have the Greek Classics Research Library (110 vols. plus Perseus Greek Classics) you can quickly jump to a reference and read it in its own original context.

  • Compose Greek sentences from English words and phrases
  • Quickly search for Greek or English words
  • Cross-references to Classical Greek writers

S.C. Woodhouse was a Professor and Scholar of Christ Church, Oxford London.

I have found Woodhouse's Dictionary to be indispensable for gaining fluency in Classical and Koine Greek, especially when honing grammar skills by translating English into Greek. I've also found it to be a tremendously useful tool for identifying and learning Greek synonyms. While there are free, almost-legible copies available on the Internet and a simple website that provides some Woodhouse lookup capability, these leave MUCH to be desired. The functionality of the Logos/Noet version will be immensely more useful--and an unbelievable bargain at pre-pub prices! Let's get this one over the 100% mark and into production!

I made extensive use of this book when I took a course in Greek prose composition. It is excellent and incredibly comprehensive. My only observation is that Woodhouse frequently only references an author's name without citing a particular work. How would it link to the Perseus Classics Collection without direct citations? Secondly, this dictionary is only useful if one is able to thoroughly search this work using English keyboards. If Logos can perform the same search functionality as the University of Chicago's online version (http://www.lib.uchicago.edu/efts/Woodhouse/), then it would indeed be very useful.
